How to masturbate with a penis

Strokers, suckers and edging. Deputy sex editor Amelia Reynolds talks with experts about how to upgrade your masturbation sessions.

We’ve always masturbated, humans have been getting themselves off for as long as we’ve known how to. Not long after the ability to carve stone was discovered, people were using their new found skill to forge what historians consider to be the earliest examples of dildos (dating back to 29,000 BC according to an article from Thrillist).

Although the sex toy industry has been on the up since the late 20th century, there still seems to be a certain stigma surrounding the use of sex toys by those who have a penis (they should just know how to do it by themselves, after all!).

Those with penises are often just expected to know how to pleasure themselves. Until recently there wasn’t much guidance given as to how to elevate masturbation and optimise pleasure.

Although the market is largely associated with vaginal pleasure there is a growing market for the penis
— Jaime Rooney

Jaime Rooney, marketing manager at Top Drawer Toys, says that although the sex toy market is  largely associated with vaginal pleasure, there is a growing market for the penis. There are “many options when it comes to our masturbation experience”, he says.

The sex toy market, especially those geared towards those with penises, is quickly growing (pardon the pun). Aside from the classic items like cock rings (which help you maintain an erection and can intensify an orgasm) there are new technologies developed constantly.

Masturbation sleeves or ‘strokers’ are “seeing a major upswing in popularity, primarily due to the newer automated models and even those that connect with VR headsets for a more immersive experience” says Michael Allmond, Co-Founder and VP of Lover’s Lane.

To take things up a notch from regular masturbation Sam Kryplone, sex expert and sexologist, suggests the use of a lubricant, roleplay or edging (or all three) to enhance solo play. Slowing down or coming to a stop altogether just before you cum can ‘intensify’ your orgasm.

And, contrary to popular belief, Kryplone explains that vibrators aren’t only for the vagina owning public. Prostate and penis vibrators can “offer intense sensations that can take your pleasure to new heights''. He suggests experimentating with “different vibration patterns and intensities to find what works best for you”.

One of the newest phenomena taking the sex toy industry by storm are strokers. They can be either automatic or manual, offering different textures – making self pleasure even more enjoyable.

Similar to the stroker, there are multiple ‘blowjob’ machines on the market. It basically does exactly what the name suggests. You place your penis in the small handheld device and using suction and vibrations, it simulates the feeling of head! How clever.

You don't have to use toys though, there are many ways to spice up your regular old hand masturbation.

Kryplone suggests the use of a lubricant, roleplay or edging  (or all three) to enhance solo play. Slowing down or coming to a stop altogether just before you cum can ‘intensify’ your orgasm.

The prostate is incredibly sensitive, and when paid close attention can offer immense pleasure

As many people are aware, the prostate is incredibly sensitive, and when paid close attention can offer immense pleasure.

To start out with, you could try a gentle massage, inserting your fingers and curving them towards your penis. If you are well versed in prostate stimulation, you could try one of the many vibrating massagers that are available to buy.

Kryplone also recommends trying a remote controlled massager, which can be just as much fun during solo play as they are with a partner. “This adds an element of surprise and exploration to your solo or shared experiences”.

If toys aren’t your thing, Rooney suggests that even the introduction of lube to masturbation can enhance your experience. “Even just using a dab of lube on the head and rubbing it could produce immense pleasure.”

There are so many options out there to pleasure your penis. Whether you’re looking to try something new to spice up your solo play or learn what you enjoy so you can introduce it to the bedroom; self pleasure is incredibly important.

By far though, the most important thing is exploration. Take some time to think about your fantasies and try new things to see what feels good. Don’t force yourself into doing things that you know you don’t enjoy but don’t close yourself off to things you want to explore a little more.
